Alert: New tricks in mobile balance transfer scam

Posted by: yaser In: Technical Reviews| Telecommunication

MY SHAREAt the moment almost every Mobile Service Provider has offered balance transfer facility between their pre-paid customers. Initially offered by Telenor as smart share it immediately got noticed and everyone else replicated it (Ufone: UShare, Mobilink’s Jazz Share, Warid’s Balance Share & Zong Yaari Load). However none of them initially realized that our market is not literate enough for such service. This eventually gave birth to a scam that is still in its full swing and there are hundreds of complaint on daily basis about customer’s mobile credit stolen by anonymous people.

The scale is so big that during Warid’s balance share launch almost everyone was getting fake messages of getting their balance doubled (asking them to send messages having balance transfer string). Thanks to Warid, the service couldn’t work during initial few days and it saved us all the pain. Even though actions against these numbers involved in this fraud are taken, there is still room for minor structural changes (we will come to that later).

New Twist:
Few days back I was sitting in office when i received a business card with a female title (name). I was busy in something really important at that time so ignored and deleted that business card. However later on I was told by a relative that whats it all about and I was amazed at the mentality of people exploiting such basic functionalities to transfer balance from pre-paid mobile accounts. Here’s how it works

  • You receive a business card with a female name ( Shazia, Nazia or some name starting with letter A).
  • Majority of people get curious and after saving , call the received contact.
  • The received contact doesn’t have a phone number in its number field rather the balance transfer code (i.e. *100*PhoneNumber*150#).
  • There you go, you have lost the balance.

Seems quite impressive as compared to its sms based counterpart.

Remedy:
All these scams can be avoided if some basic checks are enforced by Telcos,

  • Balance is not transferred until you confirm after receiving a verification message.
  • The feature is by default disabled and you have to call help line to get it enabled.
  • Giving the illegal SIMs issue its due respect.

Comparison:
Here’s how Telcos are doing it

Service Sms Based ScreenCode Based Default Safe?
Warid Balance Share Yes No ON No
Mobilink Jazz Share No Yes ON No
Telenor Smart Share No Yes OFF Yes
Zong Yaari load Yes No ON No
Ufone U share Yes No ON No

Telcos stance on the issue:

TELENOR: They have the service disabled by default and you have to go to a franchise to get it enabled which makes it Safer.
WARID: NA
MOBILINK: Takes no responsibility of the issue however takes action when a complaint is filed.
UFONE: Notices about the scam have been placed on there site to educate people and stop them from making such mistakes
ZONG: NA ..

kudos to TELENOR for doing it better:)

Zong offers this service. Its called yaariload.

Anyway they should confirm before the money is transferred. That is the best solution. Afterall my mobile asks me to confirm when I want to do something as harmless as change the wallpaper so how come the telcos don’t confirm a balance transfer that involves real money?

Also some of the concepts in this post are unfamiliar to me. The business card you speak about. That’s a soft copy? Some virtual business card? Also what’s a screen code?

one of the option can be we can mark no. spam. Like the option in emails.
(if a no. is marked as spam by someone. its outgoing messages should be scaned to balance tranfer codes.)

@ Abdussamad: Thanks for pointing it out… i have updated the details.
business card is also know as vcard in some phones… its a functionality through which you can beam a contact to someone and is included in almost all the phone available in the market

Screen code is the command which can be send through main screen (if you know a better name please update).. something similar to *111#

I still receive these type of scams on my Telenor but in the form of Voicemail.

If someone pays attention to the number the dial back is not an actual voice mail number rather telenor balance share code which if interpreted incorrectly can result in balance loss.

Happened to me once now I am verify careful in these types of scam

It is not acceptable that the balance transfer is allowed without the explicit confirmation of the user. There should be a voice prompt along the lines: you are about to lose/transfer X Rs. Are you sure?
