Why Long March was not a failure

Posted by: yaser In: Politics|Undesireable Sound

Its not a debate that there were 3 lac or 5 lac people on the roads. I guess everyone should be mature enough to realize the fact that we witnessed one of the biggest mobilization all over country in the recent history of Pakistan. I was personally amazed to see such diverse nature of public showing up for protest including lawyers, Old citizens, students, activists, civil society, ex-service men and many many more. Recent blabbing on the media about Long March being unsuccessful seems hilarious to me (just like the pre-Long March propaganda by media).

Why Long March was a Success

  • A rally where student unions like Jamiat and ISF were standing side by side and did nothing to harm each other, focusing on the prime motive, isn’t that success?
  • Such a wide variety of society segments showed up for the rally, isn’t that success?
  • Residents of small towns and villages along side GT Road, standing all night on the road just to welcome the rally, isn’t that success?
  • President Musharaf asking channels to stop coverage of the rally, isn’t that success?
  • Big gatherings of people at Mall road, Azaadi Chawk, Gujranwala,Gujrat,Jhelum,Liaquet Bagh and in front of Parliament, isn’t that success?

Why didn’t they Sit-in?

Media is saying that this decision turned Long March to a flop. I think we need to get our facts straight. Few points that should be kept in mind are as follows,

  • How many sit-ins we have in the history with so many people in them?
  • How many of them have been continued for impressive period of time?
  • Who would arrange food for all those people sitting in front of parliament?
  • Where would they go for toilets in that Open space?(i know there was some arrangement but that wasn’t good enough for sit-in)
  • Government would have never restored judiciary within a week. Why? Government will restore the judiciary but would never in a way that gives credit to Long March. Government wants to be credited for restoration of judiciary, implying
    • Judges would have never been restored within a week of rally.
    • What would have happened then? obviously people would start moving out of that place. Students would be called back by there parents, Civil society and Old citizens would have never been able to bear the scorching heat. Hence turning long march to a flop.
  • Keeping so many people organized and patient for a sit-in in such a heat would have been impossible. Hence impatience resulting into violence, attack on presidency, with that comes 58-2B. No one will  disagree that a person who is glued to presidency would have given a second thought to imposing emergency. Resulting in more violence, even worst economic, political situation of the country. Restoring judiciary would become impossible in that case.
  • In civilized world and civilized demonstrations if you show this much public power, the purpose gets fulfilled and there remains no need for sit-ins.

I second what Aitezaz Ahsan said,”its a success, we would never turn it into a defeat”. Thats what intelligent people do, thats what intelligent politics is, fullstop!!

It iwasnt a faliure at all and neither did media portray it that way. It was the anti-climax that gave way to the talk of faliure of the movment.

Let us be frankly very clear on something, those demanding a sit-in,me included, were asking for a sit-in for say 12-16 hours till the time parliment met and went into recess….so that those sitting on the couches in the parliment could hear the slogans being raised and their chairs being reverbrated by the same.

It also would have given way to a fear which no one would have expressed so openly about. For outside was sitting a group of people, they be in hundredds or thousands or even hundred thousands……….All gathered for one cause with no such affiliation.

The corridors of power would have seen then that these people if can sit in scorching sun after braving 5-6 days of travelling, well they can go to any extent.

Also even if the sit-in card was not to be played, a future strategy being announced would have given quite a boost such as “paiya-jam hartal” or a call for civil disobedience after a deadline.

However……………the Long march was not a faliure for just the amalgam of classes being represented their………..all the “jiyalas” for a cause and not a personality tout ……………..well it must be left for the people walking in the corridors of power to fill in some of the blanks. :)

As I have told many on many occasion that it was a failure. Why because a political event is always a success due to its organization and the way it make people think that they have achieved their goals. No one was sure during the event that what will happen. What were the goals of the event. (Goals and objectives are always told beforehand so that people know what they are going to acheieve and how to do it). It is not the way of a political movement to say one thing try to make arrangements for another and than at the last moment fail to respond to the expectations. I agree that the conditions were not favourable for sit-in and no objective could have been gained with it than why take such a risk by publicizing this and than at the very last moment say Oh sorry we didnt feel like it.
Although I know Aitezaz Ahsan was in pressure from his own party against it but this buried the movement for the time being. It has stoped the heat and hype which it had created. Why just because mis-planning. I expect from Ali Kurd this thing as he might be a good lawyer but he is not a good leader but Aitezaz is been in politics and he had seen and work in much bigger plans and movements. This was a really disappointment from his end.
What anyone else might say, for me it was a complete fiasco which PML(N) wins easily taking everything easily from Lawyers movement and other organizations.
I didnt want to mention Tehrek e insaf or Jamat e Islami now they only live in the corridors of PU or in few houses.
